Colin Spence - The best bit of the Virtual USA Challenge is the comradery, friendship & support...

I am originally born and bred in Belfast, I have 3 sisters, one older and two younger. I did some running at school but not a lot, my first half marathon’s and 10K’s were around Lisburn and Belfast, didn’t really know what I was doing and can’t remember my times. We moved to Bristol in the 80’s and after a while decided to start running again, that was around 2008 or earlier. I have done numerous 10k’s and Half Marathon’s plus 4 marathons.

I first met Ben at Southville Running Club in Bristol and he told me about his original 401 Challenge, I thought he was mental, but I was more than happy to support him all I could. At that time, I didn’t know about his past which came as a big surprise.

When I found out about the USA Challenge, I was all up for it to help as and when I could. I then heard about the Virtual USA Challenge and I was hooked, it would hopefully help me get back to fitness again after numerous problems with injuries. Of course, seeing the States from my armchair so to speak was a big bonus as well, I would love to be there for Ben’s final marathon but just not sure it is going to happen for me, so at least I have now got time to maybe do a marathon on the same day, now there’s a challenge!!!!

The Virtual USA Challenge is such a help to me, even though I am retired I am still busy and for the past few months haven’t been able to get out for runs or walks but with the help of the activities list and some rebounding I am still making my way through.

If it wasn’t for the Virtual Challenge, I would probably not do anything physical at all, I don’t really lack motivation, but my age doesn’t help me, I have had successive injuries, not serious but annoying, so I would rather finish my running fit so I will persevere!!!!!

I think the best bit of the Challenge is the comradery, friendship and support, no matter if you are fast or slow, walk or run or just do activities there is so much support, everyone is so helpful.

If anyone was considering doing the challenge I would say just do it, you will not be judged in any way, someone can always offer advice and there are plenty of therapists doing the challenge and if they can’t help they probably know someone who can.

If you want to join Colin and take part in one of our Virtual USA Challenge missions, you can register HERE, where will your adventure take you?
